Enhancing Participative Governance: Key Takeaways from the WeLearn Workshop

The WeLearn workshop on Participative Governance and Listening at a Bigger Scale provided participants with valuable insights into the importance of public participation in governance. It emphasized how inclusive decision-making results in better policies, services, and a deeper understanding of citizens' needs, ensuring that public sectors remain responsive, resilient, and relevant. The event also offered practical tools and methods for implementing participatory governance, with a strong focus on listening skills and core principles. One participant, Ms. Hinda Fazliova, Project Monitoring Officer at the Ministry of Finance in North Macedonia, found the workshop insightful, and we are pleased to share her feedback reflecting on the experience.

"As one of the lecturers at the workshop, professor Steve Mostyn, said, “Experiences are not yours until you think about them, reflect on them.” This insight resonated with me deeply, and I wanted to share my appreciation and reflections on professor Mostyn's lectures during the workshop. The emphasis on observation really stood out and left a lasting impact. As someone deeply influenced by Krishnamurti, I found it fascinating how professor Mostyn highlighted the importance of observation in understanding the world. I greatly appreciated the clarity and insight with which professor Mostyn conveyed this idea.

I also want to express my gratitude for the originality of his thinking. In a time when so many voices echo the same ideas, his ability to challenge and provoke deep thought is truly rare. Anyone seeking information can easily turn to tools like ChatGPT, but original thinkers—those with whom you can engage in meaningful dialogue—are becoming increasingly difficult to find, even at the highest levels of society.

Discussed ideas on leadership were also very thought-provoking, especially the description of the true leader. It was mentioned that there are leaders who seek to be liked, leaders who strive to achieve, and those who naturally influence team spirit and embody true leadership. I also believe that true leaders are people —those who are willing to sacrifice their well-being for the greater good, who fearlessly speak the truth and stand behind it, even at great personal cost. To become like them, we need professors like Steve Mostyn to challenge our thinking, our fears, and our understanding of ourselves.

Thank you once again for the inspiring insights during this workshop."
