A Journey of Professional Growth and Regional Collaboration

Earlier this year in May, Gordana Stankovic from Serbia and Danijel Stojanovski from North Macedonia participated in the workshop "Strengthening Capacities in Accounting and Auditing through Collaboration with the Network of Regional Experts." The event featured comprehensive presentations and dynamic group activities, offering valuable insights into the fields of accounting and internal auditing.

The event brought together internal auditors and certified accountants from across the Western Balkans, creating a unique platform for regional collaboration. A key session, "Exploring On-the-Job Training Strategies for Accountants and Auditors," led by Paul Mason and the CEF team, was a highlight for both Ms. Stankovic and Mr. Stojanovski. "The breakout group discussions were particularly engaging and provided a deep dive into practical strategies for enhancing skills through on-the-job training. The interactive nature of the session allowed for active participation and exchange of ideas among the participants, making the experience both informative and engaging." noted Mr. Stojanovski.

For Ms. Stankovic, as the head of a training group within the Ministry of Finance of Serbia, the workshop provided a chance to benchmark internal audit practices across the region. She observed that many countries face similar challenges in implementing new internal audit standards. "Throughout the training, I realized we are all striving towards the same goal: to maintain what works well while continually improving and adapting to the ever-changing business environment, all within the constraints of limited resources," reflected Ms. Stankovic. However, shared positive experiences highlighted the potential for collective learning to strengthen both individual and organizational capacities.

Mr. Stojanovski emphasized how the workshop boosted his confidence in contributing to and leading training initiatives, particularly in the context of transitioning to IPSAS standards, anti-corruption, digitalization, and change management. These insights have been particularly useful for understanding the broader context of accounting reforms and the specific steps needed for effective implementation. Similarly, Ms. Stankovic highlighted the importance of integrating the latest internal audit standards into her further work, particularly when developing new methodological materials, instructions, or manuals. She also highlighted how such training sessions help improve communication and presentation skills while breaking down cultural and language barriers.

Mr. Stojanovski also pointed out the significant networking opportunities the workshop provided. "I met colleagues from various countries, which has opened up new avenues for collaboration and the exchange of best practices," he shared. "These connections have already sparked discussions that could benefit the public sector in North Macedonia in the long term."

In conclusion, both Ms. Stankovic and Mr. Stojanovski found the workshop as a highly rewarding and meaningful learning experience. They appreciated structured yet flexible agenda, combined with the opportunity to exchange knowledge and network with like-minded professionals, which made this experience both enjoyable and insightful. They both to expressed their gratitude to the CEF team for organizing such an impactful event. They look forward to future opportunities to learn, collaborate, and grow as part of this vibrant professional community.
